In the summers of 1988 and 1989, the Cornell Halai East Lokris Project performed a surface survey of Mitrou. Study of finds from the survey indicates that Mitrou was inhabited throughout the Bronze Age and into the Early Iron Age. On the Greek mainland, the Bronze Age is divided into the Early Helladic (EH), Middle Helladic (MH) and Late Helladic or Mycenaean (LH). The continuing inhabitation of Mitrou in the Early Iron Age is indicated by the presence of Protogeometric pottery (PG) and Subprotogeometric pottery (SubPG) .
